Earlier in the year figuring out how to fit in time for myself was a challenge between Motherhood, Working and all these expectations I started early in the year overwhelmed and frustrated that time wasn’t on my side. I had gotten back to work full time after maternity time off and had transitioned my Daughter into daycare full time. There were a lot of changes happening. Adjusting to everything wasn’t easy. Sadly my Running became last on my to-do list.
As a month went by things weren’t changing. One day I told myself enough was enough, I had to figure things outs. Then suddenly I began to find pockets of window after Baby was asleep. It was tough. It was easier to skip a run.
I tried getting back to working out in the evenings but that barely would go to schedule!
I started out with BIG dreams of Running a couple of marathons earlier on but soon that changed after realizing physically and emotionally wasn’t ready to commit. I hired a Run Coach and joined an awesome Community of Mom Runners!
It took Mom-guilt to realize while I love Running, this was an important time for me to be spending with my Daughter. While it felt like a setback in hindsight it was a blessing and the best decision!
My focus became to to keep it simple. Simplifying what really matter to me in my life; Running (self care), My Family and Nutrition. My run goals were made around my priorities and if anything else came my way was icing on the cake. This made it a little easier to make time for myself. And days or weeks when it didn’t happen I didn’t give up. Consistency is not about every day, reality is not always possible to achieve same results every single day or that no one will get sick, injured or situation out of our control to happen..you get where I am going. Life happens! You don’t give up. If a day or two doesn’t happen that’s fine. Don’t give up just keep returning putting in the work. Soon you’ll be stronger than when you began, I promise!
Below are 5 things you can do to make this season of Running more consistent, if you are a Running Mom.
Create achievable Goals
Set goals that work with your lifestyle and every day demands. Make sure that you can fit in time to put in the work needed. If you know your life won’t allow for extra time to log in miles than perhaps a Marathon goal is not realistic but perhaps Running shorter distances are more doable.
Find a Training Program that works for YOU
There are many training plans out there if you google it. I’ve learned that not all plans are made equally. You have to find one that fits with your lifestyle and will get you to the goals you want safely. I stress SAFELY because if you are a new Mom getting back into Running make sure your training fits the stage you are at. Sometimes Free doesn’t always work out. For me decided to hire Carey Adam from RunningMoms, to customize a Running schedule that fit to my current life but also understood Womens’ health after Baby.
Get much Needed Rest
Alright…don’t laugh at this one MomRunner! I know what you thinking! I got Kids, sleeping isn’t always happening! I get it, but sleep is critical for your overall well being as much as it is for your overall performance in a Run. According to 2014 study published in the journal Sports Medicine; Getting enough sleep allows your muscles to recover, strengths your immunity and reduces inflammation. You’ll also feel less fatigue, less stressed and feeling happier.
If you are finding getting quality sleep I strongly suggest to give Essential Oils a try. Its been a safe, all natural and holistic approach for me to improve my sleep patterns. Not only has it helped me but also my Daughter especially the days when she was Teething! If you are curious to learn more you can click here and send me an email. I’d be happy to help you out.
Life happens and time gets complicated but it doesn’t mean it isn’t possible to create time. Find time whether 30 minutes or an hour for you to fit in your life. Doesn’t even have to be everyday! Did that shock you?! Pick 3 times a week and spread them apart so you aren’t over doing it.
You got a busy schedule? Howabout go for a super earlier Run before anyone in the house is up!? Or try a Lunch run or an evening time if that works best. The point is anytime is good. While, yes early Morning can be the best time for the body to have great performance reality is that’s not always possible. Don’t beat yourself up if that’s not you. Whatever you do just find the time that fits in with your life and make it happen!! Can’t get in a solo Run? That’s fine, bring the Running Stroller with you or make it into a family affair!
Join a RunCommunity
I can’t stress running with others not only keeps you motivated, accountable and you meet new people like you too! This year I joined my local Moms Run This Town/She Runs chapter to make new Run friends and meet other Mom Runners as crazy as me. They even cool with bringing my Daughter in her Stroller for a Run!
On the days I can’t meet up with a run club I have an awesome online community I run. Is all virtually! The way it works is by sharing in a private closed group my runs, following a program, getting expert advice on any run questions and receiving as well giving the support to each other. I can’t speak more highly of this community because its been one of the biggest reasons for me to kept consistency this year. We are all crazy Runners at different run experiences with same goals in mind. I can go on and on how much I love this group and everything I was able to accomplish this year but I’ll stop there. YOU HAVE to try it out!! If you are curious begin by signing up to the FREE online Running community. You got NOTHING to loose and SO MUCH to gain.
